Dale Sattler Grimes, M.D. 84 of Sandwich, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday July 31, 2014 at Valley West Hospital in Sandwich. He was born on December 6, 1929 in North Vernon, Indiana, the son of Robert L Grimes and Rose Sattler Grimes. He attended Lyons Township High School and the University of Chicago, where he received both his Bachelor of Science and MD degrees. He was a member of Phi Kappa as well as Alpha Omicron Alpha Medical Fraternity. On June 18, 1955 he married Virginia Rydholm at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Chicago. Dale interned at Cook County Hospital. In 1957, he joined the U.S. Navy and went to Flight Surgeon School in Pensacola, Florida, where he was commissioned as a Lieutenant. He and Virginia spent the next two years in Bermuda followed by a tour of duty in England from 1959 to 1963 where he finished his service as a Lieutenant Commander. He did post-graduate study in Family Practice in Denver General Hospital in Denver, Colorado. In March of 1965, je joined the Fountain Medical Clinic in Sandwich and practiced there until his retirement in 2001. While in Sandwich, he delivered more than 1,000 babies, put in nine temporary pacemakers, and helped plan the ICU at Sandwich Hospital. He loved traveling, gardening, and the companionship of his numerous English sheepdogs. Dale is survived by his wife, Virginia, his sister-in-law Joanne Rydholm, two nieces, Kristin and Julia Rydholm, and a nephew Erik Rydholm. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Todd Grimes, his parents and his brother-in-law, Ralph W. Rydholm. Visitation will be at 9:00 am on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Salem Lutheran Church, 1022 North Main Street in Sandwich. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am. Burial will be private. Memorials may be directed to the University of Chicago Medical School, Salem Lutheran Church or Valley West Hospital in Sandwich.
