Clara B Unger

Clara B. “Sis” Unger, 87, formerly of Des Moines, IA for 65 years passed away peacefully on Friday, September 1, 2017 at Serenity Hospice House in Oregon, IL. Clara was born July 11, 1930 to Vincent R. and Emma M. (Reitz) Unger in Ashton, IL. Clara graduated from Ashton High School in 1948. She battled polio in 1949-1950. She graduated from Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis, MN. She belonged to Theta Sigma Phi Business Sorority. She was employed by Doctors Sones, Rotkow, & Hornberger for 50 years in Des Moines, IA. She also worked at Unity Pointe Medical Group for 13 years. Clara was always ready to give a helping hand; giving her time to friends, taking friends to appointments or errands; this was her way – helping others any way she could. You were always welcomed with a Big Smile when you knocked on her apartment door. She was a Good Friend to many. Clara attended Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Des Moines, IA. She attended regularly and was very active within the church. She was a member of Small Group Bible Study for many years. She enjoyed playing games including “31”, Bunko, Euchre, and Tripoli with all her Des Moines friends. Clara had several hobbies including reading, collecting Hummel’s, embroidery, and knitting Christmas socks for Family. She enjoyed winter visits to Arizona with friends. She enjoyed traveling anyplace any time. She moved to The Meadows, an Assisted Living facility in Franklin Grove, IL on September 17, 2016. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Clarence “Red” and Vincent “Bub” Unger, her sister Mary Patton and several nieces and nephews. Clara is survived by her brother, Jon Unger, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. Visitation is 10:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Celebration of Life Service will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Ashton, IL with Pastor Richard Paulsen of Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church, Des Moines, IA officiating. Cremation rites have been honored through Beverage Lyons Funeral Home. Memorials are to Mills & Petrie Memorial Building, Redeemer Lutheran Church, and Serenity Hospice House.
