George Ennen, 86, of Ashton, passed away August 6 at Franklin Grove Nursing Home. He was a partner of Ennen and Weishaar for 47 years. George was a dealer for Allis Chalmers Implement and for 27 years a dealer for American Motors. Mr. Ennen was born November 23, 1923, in Gilmore City, Iowa, the son of Harm and Lena (Assing) Ennen. He married Bernice (Gussy) Weishaar on August 12, 1951, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ashton, where he was a member. George Graduated from Wartburg College, Waverley, Iowa with a B.S. and a minor degree in Phys. Ed. He taught seven years in Iowa, before moving to Ashton. Mr. Ennen especially enjoyed coaching football and wrestling. He was an Iowa College state wrestling champion. He was past president of the Ashton Lions Club and Ashton Business Boosters. George was responsible for reinstating the Summer Festival. Mr. Ennen served in the Navy during World War II and was a life-long member of American Legion Post 2910 and later transferred to Ashton Post 345. George enjoyed fishing, golfing, camping and having coffee with the men at the Huddle. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Alvin of Gilmore City, Iowa and a son-in-law, Michael (Mick) Sanders of Amboy. Survivors include his wife; a son, Douglas (Karen) Ennen of Wheaton, Illinois; a daughter, Debra Sanders of Amboy; a granddaughter, Elizabeth of Tucson, Arizona; two nephews D.V.M. Bruce (Leigh) Ennen of Muscatine, Iowa, Bart Ennen of Gilmore City, Iowa; and a niece, Betsy (Todd) Mortensen of Britt, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:00am Tuesday August 10, 2010 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ashton, with Pastor Jonathan Black officiating. Burial will be at Ashton Cemetery with Full Military Honor Guard. Visitation will be held 9:00 am until time of service at the church.
