Marilyn J. Blum, 79, of Ashton, IL passed away on May 23, 2009 at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Henrietta Blum. A graduate of Ashton High School Marilyn received both a B.S. and M.A. from Northwestern University. She dedicated her life to working with young people, both as a teacher and as a counselor. Before entering the field of college admission, she taught in Hawaii, Washington and Illinois. She then worked for Rockford College and later became Director of Admission at Scripps College in Claremont, California. Marilyn retired after 14 years as the Director of College Guidance at the Webb Schools also in Claremont. During the 31 years she lived in California, Marilyn received several awards from her colleagues. The citations noted her devoted service to teenagers’ well-being in their transition from school to college and also her active participation and leadership in the College Board and in various associations of college admission counseling. Marilyn had a sense of energy and conviction which enabled her to participate with enthusiasm in her many interests and hobbies. She was an avid traveler, collector and reader, sharing her ideas and love of learning with students, friends and colleagues. A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Sunday June 14, 2009 at 1:00 P.M., with Rev. Jonathan Black officiating.
