Alice Mae Sword, 93, of Ashton, passed away October 11, 2009 at the Franklin Grove Nursing Center. She and her husband farmed in Dixon - then moved to Ashton - owned and operated Sword’s Trucking for many years - then the Shell Gas Station/Restaurant in Ashton. She also worked at Eldmen in Dixon and retired from Etons in Rochelle. She was born on September 9, 1916 in Nachusa, IL. To Herman & Avis (March) Haenitsch. She married Harold Sword on March 9, 1934 in Belvidere, IL. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ashton, Royal Neighbors and Eastern Star and Moose of Rochelle. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Beverly Lauder; her parents; two brothers, Charles and Don Haenitsch; one sister, Wilma Shoemaker; three grandchildren, and one step-grandchild. Survivors include; one son, Lyle ( Shirley) Sword of Ashton, three daughters; Donna (the late Kenyon) Nass of Rochelle, Shirley (Marvin) Willstead of Dixon, Il., and Barbara Lawrence of Dixon, Il., 14 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 7 step-great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, 3 step-great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Black of Oregon, Il.; one son-in-law, George Lauder of St. Clair, MI., many nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Thursday October 15 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ashton with Pastor Jonathan Black officiating. Visitation will be held 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Wednesday October 14 at Coulon-Lyons Family Funeral Home 601 Richardson Ave. 815-453-2441 and at the church from 9:30 am to time of service. Interment will be in Ashton Cemetery. Memorials have been established to St. John’s Lutheran Church and/or Unity Hospice.
