Myrtle Louise DeLay, 90, of Sheridan, IL passed away on December 22, 2021. Myrtle was born on December 20, 1931 in Milton, WI, the only child of Earl Benjamin and Jessie (Burnett) Armitage. She grew up on a dairy farm. She moved to Hinsdale, IL when she was 14, and started working at Hinsdale Hospital. She met James (Jim) DeLay, her husband, soon after moving there. A couple years later, when Jim got his military papers to go to the Korean War they got married soon after on September 22, 1951. Jim went overseas and when he came home their first child, Gary, was already born.
Myrtle retired from Hinsdale Hospital in 1996. She also worked as a colporteur, selling Christian books and giving bible studies. She was an active member of Sheridan Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where she taught Sabbath School and worked with Pathfinders.
She also had a life long passion for gardening and loved her flowers. She would always take a bouquet for church every week and would take anyone in church who was sick fresh cut flowers from her garden. She also loved growing her vegetables and fruits.
She lived a day past her 90th birthday.
Myrtle is survived by 2 sons, Gary Ray DeLay of Sheridan, IL and Carl Jay DeLay (Debbie) of Marseilles, IL; As well as 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Jim DeLay, and by her parents.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, December 23, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at Elerding Cemetery in Sheridan. Funeral services are entrusted to Beverage Family Funeral Home in Sandwich, IL. Online condolences may be made at www.beveragefamilyfh.com
