With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Richard Frank Pelka (Dutch), 89, of Rochelle, Illinois, on September 4th, 2024, at Serenity Hospice and Home in Oregon, Illinois, with his family by his side. He was a cherished friend, neighbor, and family member, known for his unwavering kindness, dedication, and infectious humor. His big smile and servant's heart brought happiness and warmth to all who knew him, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand.

Dutch was born to Pearl Pelka Turanski on April 15th, 1935, in LaSalle, Peru, Illinois. He led a fulfilling life, beginning as a dedicated baseball coach, then working as a trusted farmhand, and later spending many years driving trucks before retiring. His legacy is marked by profound care and selflessness, especially towards his children and grandchildren. He was a dedicated mentor in sports, tirelessly taking them to training sessions and cheering them on at their games as their number one supporter. Dutch devoted himself wholeheartedly to the church and community, always putting the needs of others before his own.

His dearly loved wife, Marjorie E. Pelka (Marge), who passed away on October 9th, 2017, and son Paul Thompson Pelka preceded him in death. Marge was a devoted member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and actively participated in AA. She poured her heart into bringing joy and comfort to those around her, always going above and beyond.

Together, Dutch and Marge shared a beautiful 57 years of love and partnership, inspiring everyone who knew them. Their story began in Kirkland, Illinois, where Dutch first encountered Marge at the Dinner Bell, where she was waitressing. Dutch, a hardworking farmhand, often visited the diner and eagerly looked forward to his favorite meals. The romance of a farmhand and a waitress unfolded in those simple moments. Marge's warmth and charm captured Dutch's heart, leading to a lifelong romance. They married, began their journey in Fairdale, Illinois, and later settled in Rochelle, Illinois, where they started their family.

Dutch is survived by his daughter Patricia Coleman and son-in-law Lee, his son Richard Pelka and daughter-in-law Sandy, and his daughter Toni Pelka. Six grandchildren also survive him: Jennifer Wunsch (and her spouse Adam), Brian Coleman (and his spouse Jennifer), Brittany Pelka, Jacob Pelka, Allison Pelka (and her fiancé Tyler Disch), and Damon McKenzie (and his fiancé Ariana Ramos), as well as his great-grandchildren: Katy Wunsch, Dylan Coleman, Emma Coleman, Ryder Coleman, and Ja'liyah McKenzie.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 14th, 2024 at 10:30 am, followed by a luncheon at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 903 N. Caron Rd., Rochelle, IL 61068. A private burial with immediate family will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Serenity Hospice and Home in Dutch's honor.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Serenity Hospice and Home for the compassionate care they provided during the final days of his life. Their kindness and attention brought comfort and peace; the family is profoundly thankful for their support. They are also grateful to his special friend, Joanne Erickson, who frequently visited and provided comfort and companionship. Additionally, the family extends their appreciation to Rochelle Community Hospital and his Fusion Sisters, who he visited weekly, engaging him in lively sports discussions and bringing enjoyment with meaningful conversations and his favorite snacks, especially cupcakes.

Richard Frank Pelka will be missed and forever remembered for his unwavering love of family, dedicated contributions to the church, and boundless generosity. His big heart was evident in his time training future baseball stars, his honorable service in the army, his passionate support as a Cubs fan, and the countless ways he touched lives with his kindness and commitment. Richard made a remarkable impact on his community and brought enduring warmth to those around him, leaving a cherished memory that will last forever.
